According to my Anglican lectionary, March 25 is the Feast of the Annunciation (count forward 9 months and you will see why). I’m not really Catholic enough to know what to do with the Annunciation, and Christmas music in Lent isn’t quite my thing either, but this does seem to call for something a bit less penitential than your average Lenten anthem.
So here, have the St Paul’s Cathedral Choir singing ‘God so loved the world’ from John Stainer’s The Crucifixion. The lyrics are:
God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whoso believeth in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.
I don’t know the rest of the work, but I’m guessing it goes downhill from here, mood-wise. But if you squint at this piece, it is almost on theme for the day… and it is very lovely.
