Anyone Can Cook Vegetarian Food: Orange!

Today is the first day of my new pantry, which is just another way of saying I accidentally spent nearly $100 on spices and salts and infused sugars this morning.  It was very, very tempting to make spices my theme for this month, but I did that in April, and one wouldn’t want to be repetitive.  Then I thought about all the dark, leafy greens coming into season and got all enthused about a green leafy vegetable theme, only everyone thinks that vegetarians eat nothing but rabbit food anyway.

Green was clearly right out.  Let’s do a different colour instead.

The JUNE 2013 theme is ORANGE!

(because oranges are not the only orange-coloured fruit)

Let’s just start by saying that orange does actually rhyme with one word.  That word is sporange, which is a very rare form of the word sporangium, a botanical term for part of a fern or similar plant.  I can hear you all breathing a sigh of relief now that you know that.

This challenge is simple.  You can cook food of any colour you like, so long as it’s orange.  Your meal should feature one or more orange foods – pumpkins, sweet potatoes, carrots, oranges, mandarins, apricots, or any other orange foods you can think of.  Food colouring doesn’t count, especially as I already have a recipe for jaffa cake.  (Which is covered with jaffas, of course.)  On the other hand, going nuts with turmeric, saffron or paprika to make your food orange is perfectly legit, if perhaps inadvisable.

I’m still looking primarily for savoury foods, so sweet orange things are allowed only if you’ve already entered an orange savoury meal this month!

For bonus points, you may also include any recipe that features an ingredient of which the word ‘sporange’ could be used as descriptive.  In fact, if anyone does that, there will be a prize.  I shall figure out what this is in due course.  It will probably be orange.  But please make sure the ingredient isn’t poisonous first.

Challenge rules can be found at the main challenge page!  Don’t forget to add your post to the linky below once you’ve done all the lovely adding of icons and linking back to this page, so that you can get the blog hop code for your own page.

I’m kind of looking forward to this blog-hop.  I suspect it’s going to be very stylish, for a value of stylish last seen in the 1970s.

All the orange puns I can think of are too terrible to inflict on you.  Just imagine a bad joke about orange-utangs, and you’ll be right there with me, wondering what I was thinking.

I can’t wait to see your orange-themed entries!

… you know, I started this post by saying vegetarians don’t just eat rabbit food, and what am I encouraging you to cook with?  Carrots.  There’s something wrong with this picture…

  1. I have started saying orange with a kiwi accent because I think I can find rhymes if I do.

I only started half a minute ago, so I may be a while.

    It’s quite fun.

  2. Mange, however, is quite bad for the throat.

  3. oh no wonder you need to go to the market tomorrow now your pantry challenge is over – I can imagine you will be very excited to restock! Am glad it is not just the fruit orange in the challenge – I think I might have an orange coloured dish for this event

  4. Exactly so! I may have slightly over-reacted, though. I was saying to Andrew that I’d better just stick to things like rice and pasta and sugar for a while now. I do have a lot of excellent new spices and sauces and oils and vinegars…
