It’s no secret that I find summer a very taxing time to be in the kitchen. I hate being hot and sticky, and I hate it that switching on the stove or the oven just makes the house even more stifling. What better time of year to embrace the world of ‘un-cooking’?
The JANUARY 2014 theme is i am vegetarian – hear me raw!
(Because no challenge is complete without a really horrible pun)
This challenge is about not turning on the stove, the oven, or any other source of flame. You don’t have to be strict about your rawness – I’m totally OK with you using things like maple syrup or honey or chocolate or even ricotta or beans from a tin – but this isn’t a salad challenge, either. I’d like to see meals that really are raw from start to finish, and if they break out the vegetable spiraliser, all the better!
I’d also like to see meals that don’t take days of pre-planning. There is some wonderful raw food out there, but when a recipe starts by making you soak your nuts for a day, then grind them, then dehydrate them for two days, all before you even get going with the other ingredients, it’s just depressing. And unlikely to happen, in my kitchen at least. Let’s stick to recipes that will entice people into the wonderful world of raw food, rather than making them run screaming for the hills…
Desserts are allowed, because I am all over raw desserts, but I’m really hoping to see a range of savoury meals this month. This really is about making dinner without heating up the house…
