I’ve saved this carol for last because Christmas Day is all about the big descants (musically speaking, anyway – there is, I understand, also a theological meaning to the day…), and this is a descant I’ve wanted to sing for years.
The arrangement is mine, but based on the traditional SATB arrangement. I put it together a few years ago when I found my work choir suddenly bereft of baritones and needed an SAA version that worked.
And over the top – and really, over the top is exactly the right phrasing here – is a descant that I remember eyeing enviously in someone’s carol folder many, many years ago and doing my best to memorise on the spot! I’m not sure if I’ve remembered it correctly, and I’m afraid I don’t know who wrote the original, but it’s lovely and baroque and triumphal – very appropriate to the day!
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas, and a safe and happy 2021!
