I have loved this arrangement of Away in a Manger ever since I first saw it in the old green Oxford Carols Book. Later editions didn’t include it, I suspect because people sing Away in a Manger to please the children, and the children are not pleased if you sing it to a tune they don’t know!
I’ve never sung it outside those gigs where we used to sing every single thing in the Green book, presumably for similar reasons. And I’m not sure we even sang it that much then…
But I think this melody is absolutely gorgeous, with its minor key and those lovely clashes in the last line, finishing with the unresolved chord at the end of each verse – it takes the simple words and gives them an air of mystery and strangeness which I adore.
I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do!
